Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi , one of India 's leading B-schools, has taken its quest for excellence and innovation across national boundaries by forging a relationship with the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Pakistan .
An FMS delegation to LUMS is now back in India . The visit, according to students, was not only an academic experience but also an eye-opener about life and people in Pakistan . “The hospitality extended to us was exceptional. Every single person did his best to make our stay memorable,” says Mitesh Karia, an FMS student.
The FMS delegation stayed at the LUMS campus itself, and attended classes just like any regular student. Says Pravesh Saha, who was part of the FMS delegation: “We attended classes on supply chain management, business law and management information systems. LUMS has world class faculty and excellent infrastructure. In addition to classroom learning, we also had a field visit to Packages Limited, the largest packaging company in Pakistan .”

Much like the FMS students, their counterparts at LUMS showed a keen interest to know about India and its people. “We had structured discussions on many different aspects of Indo-Pak relations, be it politics, outlook of people, or cricket,” says Saha.
The aim of the visit was to give the students both an academic and cultural experience. FMS believes that while political diplomacy helped in ironing out past differences, and sports brought the two countries closer, it is now the turn of higher education to be the new face of diplomacy. The delegation to LUMS was thus conceptualised as an opportunity to foster greater academic interaction and better understanding among students in both countries. “The people in Pakistan are not different from us. No outsider looking at the 20-strong group that was formed at LUMS during our stay there could have figured out who among us were Indians and Pakistanis,” says Kiran Satish, another FMS student.
The success of this endeavour has opened the doors for more student exchange programmes between LUMS and FMS in the future. In the long run, perhaps, it might open the channels of communication and commerce for enhanced trade between the two neighbouring countries.
